Atlantisite is the name given to a powerful stone that combines Stichtite and Serpentine. This crystal is also commonly referred to as Tasmanite, due to some of the very first known pieces coming out of Tasmania. The Atlantisite that comes out of South Africa is designated “Stichtite-Serpentine”, but is no different than Tasmanite or Atlantisite. This mineral color ranges from a very pale green to dark ivy green with purple spots of Stichtite throughout. Atlantisite is on the rarer side of gems and is one of the most powerful forms of Serpentine, next to Infinite.
Serpentine is composed of magnesium iron silicate hydroxide that belongs to the Kaolinite-Serpentine group of crystals. Serpentine crystals have their origins in metamorphic alterations of peridotite and pyroxene. Serpentines may also pseudomorphously replace other magnesium silicates. These alterations may be incomplete, causing physical properties of serpentines to vary widely. Stichtite is composed of hydrated magnesium chromium carbonate hydroxide. Stichtite is a rare and unusual carbonate. It forms in mostly compact masses or micaceous aggregates and is in stark contrast to the majority of carbonates that form well shaped, large and abundant crystals. It is formed as an alteration product of chromite containing serpentine. The majority of stichtite is mined exclusively in Tasmania, Australia but can also be found in Ontario and South Africa.
