♦ GEMSTONE STORY
Ocean Jasper is a very rare and highly collectable stone because it can only be found in the coast of Madagascar. It’s also known by the name of Sea Jasper, Ocean Orbicular Jasper, Cellular Jasper, and Atlantis Stone. It got the name Ocean Jasper because it perfectly reflects the stone’s beautiful relationship to the ocean. It’s a many-colored stone with orb-like inclusions, and with background colors like green, yellow, pink, grey, blue, red, cream, white, black, and brown. This stone has all the colors of the rainbow! There are also many bands and patterns of color in the stone. Some will even have sparking druzy quartz in them. The polka dots, wavy and curly lines, and colorful floret patterns are what make this a beautiful and exciting stone!
Ocean Jasper is a trade name for a multicolored stone from Madagascar, typically with spherical patterning. Although commonly described as an orbicular jasper, the most recent research suggests it is the mineral chalcedony instead. Some pieces have agate banding or druses of clear quartz, a coating of tiny crystals, known more commonly as “druzy”.
The variety of quartz known as chalcedony is often unfamiliar to people. It is actually the mother stone of many semiprecious gems: banded chalcedony is better known as agate, red as carnelian, and black as onyx, etc. Ocean Jasper’s capacity to transmit light is a characteristic of chalcedony. By definition jasper is not translucent, unless cut extremely thin.
