Petrified wood is a fossil. It forms when plant material is buried by sediment and protected from decay due to oxygen and organisms. Then, groundwater rich in dissolved solids flows through the sediment, replacing the original plant material with silica, calcite, pyrite, or another inorganic material such as opal.

Wood opal is a form of petrified wood which has developed an opalescent sheen or, more rarely, where the wood has been completely replaced by opal. It takes millions of years for petrified wood to form. The process begins when wood is buried quickly and deeply by water and mineral-rich sediment, removing it from a high-oxygen environment. Other names for this opalized sheen-like wood are opalized wood and opalized petrified wood. It is often used as a gemstone.
